Move over Starbucks, I will be sipping this healthier Iced Brown Sugar-Shaken Espresso all summer long. It’s so so good. This refreshing drink is easy to make at home and will be made quicker than it would take to even drive to Starbucks.

We’re nearing the end of Espresso Summer and this iced coffee seriously has my heart. Give me all those cinnamon, frothy vibes.

This refreshing and flavorful Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso is made with rich espresso shots, sweet unrefined coconut sugar, and a touch of cinnamon, all shaken with ice for a perfectly chilled and invigorating coffee treat.

A huge bonus is it’s dairy-free, vegan, gluten-free and refined sugar-free!

Ingredients and Substitutions for a Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso

  • Cinnamon– obvi. I always buy Ceylon cinnamon because it is “true” cinnamon. I always buy this brand from Amazon and refill my cinnamon spice bottle with it.
  • Coconut Sugar– The perfect paleo, refined sugar-free substitute for brown sugar in this drink. You can absolutely use normal brown sugar. Adjust the amount of sugar to your sweetness preference! I love this coconut sugar
  • Sea Salt– Just a pinch! Don’t skip this step, a teensy bit of salt brings out the flavors of this drink.
  • Espresso– 2 shots. I haven’t tried it with normal coffee, I don’t think it would yield a froth like the espresso does thanks to the crema on top and would not have as deep of a depth of flavor but if you try it, let me know how it goes!

If you are in the market for an espresso machine, my husband and I love love love our Breville Bambino Espresso Machine. It’s completely stainless steel which was important for me since I didn’t want boiling hot water going through plastic and has lasted us a good year and a half with no complaints. Everyday we get to have coffeeshop coffee at home which has made it such a good investment.

Almond Milk– You can substitute any milk that you love here. Oat milk is what Starbucks uses. But if you use a good almond milk, I think its just as good. I personally love Califia Farms almond milk (the one that says 3 Ingredients on the front), it is so creamy and perfect.

Now grab your simple ingredients and let’s whip this perfect drink up!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon see ingredients and subsitutions for recommended brand!
  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 2 shots espresso
  • 1 1/2 cup almond milk or any milk you like! Use oat if you want it to be most similar to Starbucks

Instructions

  • Make a double shot of espresso from whatever espresso machine you use. I have my favorite tried and true brand linked above!!
  • In a mason jar, cocktail shaker or any empty jar with a lid, add the cinnamon, coconut sugar, and sea salt. Pour the espresso on top so the ingredients melt together.
  • Add a good handful of ice to the jar, put the lid on and shake like your life depends on it! (At least 30 plus seconds)
  • Add fresh ice to a glass and pour the almond milk on top. (You can use more or less depending on how creamy you like your iced coffee!)
  • Pour the shaken espresso mixture on top and admire the beautiful natural froth that was created. Stir and enjoy!!!
